Australia confirms renewal of Qantas Airways and Emirates Airline alliance

Australia's competition regulator has authorised the Qantas-Emirates Airline passenger and cargo alliance between Australia, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, New Zealand and North Africa for another five years. Read More » The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) issued a draft determination in June that indicated it would approve the tie-up. ACCC Commissioner, Anna Brakey, said allowing Emirates and Qantas to continue working together will benefit travellers. However, the alliance’s extension has conditions attached to the Sydney-Christchurch route because Air New Zealand is the only other airline with nonstop flights between the two cities. “We have granted authorisation with a condition Qantas and Emirates must provide regular updates on passenger revenue and operating costs so we can monitor competition on this route in the next five years,” Brakey said.
