Japan Airlines orders 42 aircraft new aircraft

Following its board of directors meeting Japan Airlines (JAL) announced on March 21 the decision to acquire 32 aircraft from Airbus and 10 aircraft from Boeing. Read More » The majority of ordered aircraft will be used on international routes with a primary focus on regions such as North America, Asia, and India where JAL anticipates future growth. In total, for this purpose, Japan’s flag carrier ordered 20 Airbus A350-900 and 10 Boeing 787-9. Currently, the carrier is using A350-900s on domestic routes and uses the fleet on 50 787s. The introduction of both aircraft types is planned over approximately six years, starting in FY2027. As of 2030, JAL aims to expand and grow its international network, increasing the combined supply capacity of both full-service carriers and low-cost carriers (LCCs) by approximately 1.4 times. To serve domestic routes, and to “update their existing fleet of medium-sized Boeing 767 aircraft” JAL ordered 11 Airbus A321neo aircraft. This marks the first introduction of Airbus A321neo aircraft in the carrier’s fleet, which will be deployed starting in 2028. JAL has also decided to introduce one additional Airbus A350-900 in the domestic configuration of the cabin as a replacement for the A350-900 aircraft that was lost in January 2024. Also on March 21 JAL Group formulated the“JAL Group Medium-Term Management Plan Rolling Plan 2024 for Fiscal Years 2021-2025” to further ensure the achievement of the ”JAL Group Medium-Term Management Plan for Fiscal Years 2021-2025”.
