An International Air Transport Association (IATA) report on single use plastic products (SUPP) has recommended more collaboration between airlines, regulators and the broader aviation supply chain to reduce the impact of SUPP on the environment. Read More » The Reassessing Single Use Plastics Products in the Airline Sector report, prepared by IATA in partnership with Travel Without Plastic and climate action non-government organisation, WRAP, said airlines faced a significant barrier to improved recycling and circularity of waste management due to a combination of technical and operational obstacles and a lack of harmonised and risk-based regulations. The report called for a “sectoral approach” to managing SUPP in aviation. “Airlines are taking a comprehensive approach to sustainability that includes addressing the environmental impact of SUPP,” IATA senior vice president for sustainability and chief economist, Marie Owens Thomsen, said. “The recommendations of this report will help airlines, regulators and the supply chain to manage the complexities of reducing SUPP. This includes finding alternatives to SUPP, creating a harmonised regulatory framework and promoting sector-wide collaboration.”
