Asia-Pacific airlines led global air cargo growth in April

Asia-Pacific airlines booked a 14.0% year-on-year increase in air cargo demand in April, topping the table for all regions monitored by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Read More » IATA data showed demand, measured in cargo tonne kilometers (CTKs), grew by 13.2% in Asia compared with April 2023. Asia-Europe air cargo business was higher by 17.7%, but Asia-Middle East air freight growth, at 10.4%, was lower than the previous month. Capacity or available cargo tonne kilometers (ACTK), increased by 7.8% year-on-year. Global demand rose 11.1% against April 2023 and capacity increased by 7.1% from a year ago. “While many economic uncertainties remain, it appears the roots of air cargo’s strong performance are deepening. In recent months, air cargo demand grew even when the Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) was indicating potential for contraction. With the PMI now indicating growth, the prospects for continued strong demand are more robust,” IATA director general, Willie Walsh, said.
