Air New Zealand cites intense competition across the Pacific, flat passenger numbers for reported month

Air New Zealand (Air NZ) flew 1.167 million passengers in May, little changed from the 1.168 million passengers it transported in the same month a year ago. Read More » Capacity was lower by 2.5%, but passenger load increased 3.9 percentage points to 79.5%. “Intense international competition features heavily in the current trading environment, particularly for North America,” Air NZ said in its latest update. “U.S. competitors have not yet returned to China at scale and for now have directed some of that additional capacity to the New Zealand market, putting pressure on yields.” Typically, May and June were the two months of the year with lowest demand, the Star Alliance member added. The airline transported 757,000 passengers across its domestic network in the 31 days, down 3.9% from the 788,000 passengers flown a year ago.
