China Airlines (CAL) has announced two A330-300 Pacific climate observation aircraft have been equipped with the latest nitrogen oxide and carbon dioxide observation instruments to collect data for the International Meteorological Organization for research. Read More » The Taiwan-based SkyTeam airline cooperates with Taiwan’s Central University, the European Union’s In-service Aircraft for a Global Observing System (IAGOS) program and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) to monitor climate over the Pacific Ocean. CAL has participated in the Pacific Greenhouse Gases Measurement (PGGM) Project since 2007. In 2012, it launched the world’s first trans-Pacific climate observation aircraft, an A340-300, before retiring the aircraft in 2017. In 2016, CAL equipped another two A330-300s with IAGOS atmospheric instruments and advanced optical and laser equipment to collect data for the International Meteorological Organization. The research is conducted in flight corridors and collects data on water vapor, carbon monoxide, and cloud droplet particle concentration among other measurements. CAL’s new 777Fs are equipped with turbulence detection and calculation technology software that live feeds to the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Turbulence Aware Platform.
