Read More » The proposed law, a result of the extensive Harris Review, stipulates airlines can be penalized for failing to use a slot, applying for slots with no reasonable prospects of using them and failing to return or transfer unused slots. The proposed law also will introduce a recovery period for major disruptions such as severe weather to allow an extra five airlines to take off or land each hour for two hours. However, only flights scheduled for the day will be permitted to take off or land outside daily curfew hours. At present, Sydney Airport is restricted to 80 movements an hour with no provision for amendments after disruptions including bad weather. “This is an important and positive step in delivering better results for passengers by reducing cancellations and delays. They are the first improvements in the legislation that governs Sydney Airport’s operations in more than 27 years. We commend the government for seeing them through,” Sydney Airport CEO, Scott Charlton, said.
