Aircraft shortage shrinks Air New Zealand capacity by 4.6%

Short-haul ASKs were lower by 2% and long-haul capacity declined 6.6% against 12 months earlier. “The reduction in capacity is a result of aircraft availability,” Air NZ said in a regulatory filing. Capacity has been lower on a year-on-year basis since May. Passenger numbers dropped by 7.3%, to 1.5 million, in September and revenue per available seat kilometre (RASK), a measure of demand, declined 5.2%. “Some Asian routes benefited from improved yields in the current year,” Air NZ said. “However, North America is still impacted by intense competition against the previous comparative period.”
