Australia’s domestic airfares increase after Rex ceases inter-city flying

Domestic airfares in Australia rose sharply in September following the entry into administration of regional carrier Rex Airlines in late July, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said this week. Read More » In its domestic airline competition report, ACCC said average airfares for all major city routes in Australia had risen by 13.3% from the time of Rex's collapse to September 30. “The recent spike in airfares corresponds with a less competitive domestic airline sector after Rex’s exit from 11 of the 23 services between metropolitan cities," ACCC Commissioner, Anna Brakey, said. “The exit of Rex as a third competing airline group between metropolitan cities may have significant longer-term impacts on the domestic aviation sector.” The ACCC reported available seats on major metropolitan routes had declined 6% since July.
