Japan Airlines CEO and chairman suffer pay penalties after pilot drinking incident

Japan Airlines (JAL) CEO, Mitsuko Tottori, and the company’s chair, Yuji Akasaka, have had their salaries cut by 30% for two months in response to a recent incident involving pilots drinking before a flight, a company spokesperson said. Read More » The incident occurred last December when two JAL pilots rostered to fly JL774 from Melbourne to Tokyo Narita registered a positive reading for alcohol from self-administered tests before departure. As a result the flight was delayed by three hours. The oneworld alliance member prohibits pilots from drinking alcohol within 12 hours of a flight. Akasaka also had his responsibility for overseeing safety measures at the airline taken from him. In 2018 some JAL senior executives had similar pay cuts and disciplinary action imposed on them for incidents involving pilots and alcohol.
