Thailand to regulate air fare increases as peak national holiday approaches
February 6th 2025
The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) is introducing caps on air fares in the lead up to the April Songkran holiday peak, the Bangkok Post reports. Read More » A price ceiling has been set based on flight distances, capping LCC fares at 9.40 baht (US$0.28) per kilometre and full-service fares at 13 baht per kilometre. The regulations apply to direct bookings with airlines. CAAT has proposed three key strategies to contain future air fare increases: expand capacity by incentivizing airports and air traffic service providers to increase flight availability during peak travel seasons; conduct regulatory reviews from gathered data to reassess fare regulations; and ensure a balanced pricing structure that benefits airlines and passengers and cuts costs for carriers. CAAT director, Suttipong Kongpool, said the initiatives are a result of a directive from Thailand’s deputy prime minister and transport minister, Suriya Jungrungreangkit, to control air fares for the benefit of travelers.
