Local media reports the Sarawak government intends to rebrand MASwings as AirBorneo after the 100% purchase is signed off. "By taking this strategic step, we are positioning Sarawak as an aviation hub for Borneo and a gateway to ASEAN, opening doors to new opportunities and fostering greater connectivity and accessibility to both domestic and international destinations,” Sarawak premier, Abang Johari Tun Openg, told the Bernama news outlet. Sarawak has been acquiring control of key assets across the country including distribution, seaports and banks, allowing it greater political and economic autonomy from Malaysia’s national government.
