Virgin Australia overtook Qantas as Australia’s largest domestic airline in December

Read More » The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) said compared with December 2023, VA in-country passengers increased 15.8%. The Qantas Group airline said passengers it carried in the month increased by 3.2%. The ACCC said VA’s domestic share of the market hit 35% in December surpassing Qantas (34.6%) and Jetstar (29%). VA also outperformed its rival in service reliability with a 0.6% cancellation rate in December compared with Qantas (2.7%). “Despite some airlines increasing their seating capacity throughout the year, this was outstripped by growth in passenger numbers, leading to fuller flights,” ACCC Commissioner, Anna Brakey, said “We recognize delivery delays for new aircraft have presented significant challenges, but we encourage all airlines to find other ways to increase their seating capacity to cater to the growing passenger demand”.
