The Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) January update reports the region’s carriers booked 19.9% year-on-year growth for the month, transporting 35.2 million international passengers in the 31 days. Read More » Demand measured in revenue passenger kilometres increased 22.5%, exceeding a 17.4% year-on-year capacity expansion. Averaged international passenger load factor was higher by 3.5% to 83.7% for the month. The results were driven by a surge in leisure travel in the Lunar New Year festive period, AAPA said. “The relatively high load factors reflects strong demand but also ongoing capacity constraints, compounded by the grounding of aircraft due to engine issues and delays in aircraft deliveries. These challenges have contributed to an increase in expenditure on maintenance, aircraft leasing, and labour. Greater competition lowered yields and operating margins,” AAPA director general, Subhas Menon, said. “Growth prospects remain promising in the coming months against a backdrop of steady expansion in global economic activity. However, ongoing geopolitical and trade tensions pose potential risks to both business sentiment and consumer demand in the months ahead.”
