March 6th 2025
IndiGo, India’s largest airline, will be the first carrier to relocate some Mumbai operations to the new Navi Mumbai Airport, Bloomberg Markets reports. Read More » The airport, which has been developed by billionaire Gautam Adani, is reported to be in discussions with Air India Express, SpiceJet, and Akasa Air about moving to Navi. Air India will continue to operate from the city’s existing airport but it will shift more of its domestic operations to Navi Mumbai. The current airport and the Navi development are managed by Adani Group. The US$2.1 billion Navi airport is a landmark infrastructure project built with the intention of becoming an international transit hub matching Dubai, London or Singapore. Local authorities will build an “aero city” around the new airport to increase non-aviation revenue. A limitation of Navi is it will lack high speed transport links until the completion of new metro line between the two airports. Adani Group discussions with airlines are focused on slot allocations and incentivized airport fees. Navi Mumbai is a single terminal development with an initial annual capacity of 20 million passengers. Capacity will be added to the terminal in phases to handle an estimated 90 million passengers within the next decade.
