Philippines authorities to educate public on rules for carrying power banks on board

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) is working closely with airlines to develop awareness and establish guidelines to educate air travellers about the proper handling of power banks. Read More » Power banks, classified as portable lithium-ion battery devices, are strictly prohibited in checked baggage because they risk overheating, CAAP said. Passengers may hand carry the chargers but only if they do not exceed 160Wh. Power banks up to 100Wh may be brought onboard without prior approval while power banks between 100Wh and 160Wh require airline approval to be carried onboard. Rules for power banks carried in flight are in the spotlight after an Air Busan aircraft departing Gimhae Airport for Hong Kong on January 28 caught fire. No one was injured in the incident, but the narrow-body was destroyed. Since then, airlines in South Korea and Taiwan are restricting or forbidding passengers to carry power banks onboard.
