Major Australian airlines benefit from “minimal competition” in local market

In a new report, Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) commissioner, Anna Brakey, said Australia’s two major airlines have had the advantage of “minimal competition” in the domestic market. Read More » The recent half-year financial results of Qantas Group and Virgin Australia (VA) highlighted the former’s dominance of the business market and VA’s stronger financial footing after it emerged from administration, the competition regulator said. “The high half-yearly earnings reported by Qantas Group reflect its dominance of the domestic airline sector with Qantas and Jetstar accounting for more than 60% of passengers,” Brakey said. “Jetstar has capitalized on the absence of competitive pressure from another low-cost carrier in the domestic market to build market share and [its] operating margin.” VA increased its domestic market share from 31.3% in March 2024 to 34.4% a year later following the collapse into administration of Rex and the subsequent shuttering of the regional carrier’s services on several metropolitan routes, the ACCC report said.
