More than three million foreign tourists visited Japan in August

Japan said 3,428,000 foreign visitors took in its sights in August, a 16.9% year-on-year increase, Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) data details. Read More » For the month, Japan received the most visitors ever from Spain and Taiwan, while 18 markets - South Korea, China, it said. Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, India, Australia, the U.S., Canada, Mexico, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, the Nordics and the Middle East - delivered higher numbers of guests to Japan’s major tourist attractions. JNTO said 36.5% more of these guests were from China, now Japan’s biggest origin market, followed by South Korea with 660,900 visitors (up 8.0%), Taiwan with 620,700 visitors (10.0% plus) and 226,100 visitors from Hong Kong. The numbers are an 8.3% decline in foreign visitors, but the fall-off is not as steep as previous months when social media rumours about a giant earthquake and tsunami were sparked by an illustration in Manga comic book that resulted in Hong Kong tourists avoiding Japan. JNTO said the previous highest number of tourists to Japan for a August month were 2,933,381 foreign tourists in 2024.
