November 13th 2015
On Wednesday, Singapore Airlines (SIA) and Lufthansa German Airlines agreed they will operate flights between Singapore, Frankfurt, Munich and Zurich under a revenue-sharing agreement. Read More » The deal between the two Star Alliance carriers has to be approved by the relevant authorities.
The agreement also included more than 20 new codeshare routes that will be expanded to more routes, said Lufthansa. Lufthansa subsidiaries, Swiss International Air Lines and Austrian Airlines, are participating in the agreement, as is SIA regional offshoot SilkAir. "More such deals will follow," a spokesman for Lufthansa told Reuters.
Lufthansa has been boosting its presence in the Asia-Pacific for years. The German flag carrier has a joint venture with Japan’s All Nippon Airways (ANA) and a tentative deal with Air China in the past two years, which still has not been cleared by regulators on the Mainland.
SIA said its Dusseldorf service would start on July 21 and would be included in the partnership. SIA will fly the route three times a week with one of its 70-on-order A350s, with deliveries starting from February. “Dusseldorf will complement our existing services to Europe and be served by all-new A350-900s, fitted with SIA’s latest cabin products,” said SIA senior vice-president marketing planning, Lee Wen Fen.
Several Asia-Pacific carriers have added Dusseldorf to their networks in the past two years, including Air China, ANA and since September, Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific Airways.
