Read More » The master plan showed the airport was expected to handle 72.6 million passengers by 2045, up from 42.5 million last year. The document also proposed development of the current Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 domestic precinct on the eastern side of the airfield to allow for the operation of international services, which currently only take place at Terminal 1 at the western end of the airport. "Kingsford Smith is Australia’s busiest airport, it must remain fit for the future," the Minister for Transport in Australia, Catherine King, said. "As demand grows, a modern Kingsford Smith will remain crucial to transport, tourism and industry across NSW and the nation." In Australia, airports are required under legislation to prepare a 20-year master plan detailing the strategic vision of the facility, including future land uses, types of permitted development, and noise and environmental impacts, every five or eight years. "Approval of Sydney Airport Master Plan 2045 provides a clear pathway to plan for future demand and invest in the infrastructure Sydney will need over the next two decades," Sydney Airport CEO, Scott Charlton, said. "Importantly, it provides a framework for growing sustainably and responsibly, minimising environmental impacts and working closely with the communities surrounding the airport."
