Australia’s domestic passengers are receiving some air fare relief this month with business class and some economy fares lower than a year ago, government figures show. Read More » Australia’s Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics (BITRE) monthly report said its measure of business fares dropped by 10.7 index points, or 18.9%, to 46 points in October. It was the lowest measure for business class since October 2021, when the index was at 44.3 points. The measure of restricted economy fares also fell in October, easing 6.6%, or 4 index points, to 56.7 points. However, the BITRE measure for best discount economy fares headed in the opposite direction in October, rising 3.7 index points, or 5.4%, to 72.32 points. "The series is a price index of the lowest available fare in each fare class weighted over selected routes," BITRE said. "It does not measure real airline yields or average fares paid by passengers."
