China’s Wuhan readies for second runway

Wuhan’s Tianhe International Airport will open a second runway at the end of June, reports Mainland media this week. Read More » The facility will be the first dual runway airport in central China and will ease worsening peak hour congestion that is responsible for regular flight delays. The second runway will be 3,600 meters long and 60 meters wide and capable of accommodating the A380. A new passenger terminal is under construction.
Tianhe logs approximately 500 aircraft movements a day. In 2015, it registered 19 million passengers. With the new runway, capacity will increase to 40 million passengers annually.
Tianhe is lobbying carriers to commence long-haul services to the airport. Air France is the only international carrier to serve the capital of China’s Hubei province with its thrice-weekly nonstop route to Paris. China Southern Airlines flies three times a week to San Francisco (via Guangzhou) and Rome’s Fiumicino, respectively.
