Ethiopian eyes Bangkok as regional hub

Addis Ababa-based Ethiopian Airlines is planning to develop Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport into its regional hub, according to reports by the Ethiopian State News Agency and the carrier’s regional manager for Thailand and southeast Asia, Meaza Taye. Read More »
From November, Ethiopian will route its new Hanoi service via Bangkok and from March it plans to route flights to Singapore and Jakarta through the Thai capital. It already uses Suvarnabhumi as a stopover point for flights from Addis to Manila and Kuala Lumpur. The Star Alliance member is banking on fifth freedom rights to sustain the add-on sectors.
The Tewolde Gebremariam-led airline will receive the first of twelve-on-order A350-900s later this month. The Airbus jet is expected to provide efficiencies for Ethiopian’s network development, particularly in the Asia-Pacific. The Ethiopian A350 is a major coup for Airbus. It is the carrier’s first Airbus aircraft.
