Philippines’ flag carrier, Philippine Airlines (PAL), is hoping for improved net earnings in the second quarter, following a 21.2% decline in the first quarter, which PAL president, Jaime Bautista, attributed to lower fares. “[April], May and June hopefully will be a better quarter for us,” he said.
PAL has been expanding quickly in the past year, putting pressure on loads and fares. It added Jeddah, Doha and Kuwait to its network and a nonstop Cebu-Los Angeles link.
On Wednesday, PAL launched a twice a week Manila-Saipan A320 route, the first direct link between the Philippines and the U.S. overseas territory. It also will launch a Manila-Taipei-Osaka service on June 25 and increase frequency on the Manila-Heathrow A340 route from six-weekly to daily.
