The U.S. Department of Transportation (DoT) this week made a preliminary decision about the allocation of the five daytime slots for U.S. carriers at Tokyo’s downtown Haneda Airport. Read More »

Delta Air Lines and Hawaiian Airlines are considered the big winners. Delta has been assigned two slot pairs, one for Haneda-Los Angeles and another for Haneda-Minneapolis/St.Paul. Hawaiian has been granted a Haneda-Honolulu daytime slot pair. This is in addition to Hawaiian being pre-awarded the sole night-time slot for a split Honolulu (four-weekly) and Kona (thrice-weekly) operation.

The remaining two applicants, American Airlines and United Airlines, were allocated a daytime slot pair each: American for a Los Angeles route and United to San Francisco. The DoT warned Delta that if it cancelled the Minneapolis slot it would award it to American for a new service to Dallas/Fort Worth.  It added that should Delta underutilize the slot, as it did last year when it failed to operate a daily service between Haneda and Seattle, as had been agreed, it risked having its Haneda presence reviewed. All parties have until July 30 to submit their objections.

The allotment for the Japanese carriers had been awarded previously. All Nippon Airways (ANA) received three day and one night slot.  Japan Airlines (JAL) was granted two daytime slots. ANA is eventually expected to operate its three on-order A380s from Haneda to Hawaii.
