Hawaiian considers A330neo and A380 for flights to Europe
September 30th 2016
Hawaiian Airlines is evaluating the viability of flying nonstop between Hawaii and London from 2019 with its six on-order A330-800neos. Read More »
“We certainly hope the answer is yes, but we don’t have all the information we need,” Hawaiian CEO, Mark Dunkerley, told media. “It’s going to depend on what our final seating configuration is and therefore the weight of the neo and its exact performance and statistics when it’s built.”
On the routes front, Dunkerley said China was “the really exciting prospect”, although it was also looking at new destinations in Australia, in addition to points on the U.S. East Coast and Canada. Hawaiian flies to Beijing three times a week with A330s.
Bloomberg said the carrier also is taking a serious look at the A380 for routes to slot constrained airports such as Los Angeles and Tokyo, which it serves with A330 and B767 aircraft six times and three times daily, respectively. Dunkerley said the business case for the A380 was “not conclusive”.
The airline now has a fleet of 49 aircraft, including 23 A330-200s, eight B767-300ERs and 18 B717s for intra-island hops. It will start taking delivery of 16 A321neos next year for flying on the 2,600-mile journey from Hawaii to the U.S. West Coast. This will enable Hawaiian to retire three of its B767s and switch more A330s to East Asian routes while still adding capacity, said Dunkerley.
