Turkish Airlines defers 167 aircraft as nation’s political crisis hits visitor numbers

It’s been a bad year for Turkish Airlines. After posting a $644 million first-half net loss and suffering from an intensifying of the political crisis in Turkey, the flag carrier has announced it would defer 167 Airbus and Boeing aircraft due for delivery from 2018 to 2022: 92 A321neos, 65 B737 MAX 8s and ten MAX 9s. The airline’s CEO, Temel Kotil, said it would reduce frequencies and shift to smaller aircraft on “demand-challenged routes”. But the Star Alliance member said it would take delivery of all aircraft scheduled for this year - seven A321s, five A330-300s, an A330-200F, 14 B737NGs and six B777-300ERs - and would focus on matching 2015 numbers of 61.2 million passengers carried this year.
Also in Turkey, Embraer and AerCap have announced the placement of three E190-E2s and two E195-E2s with privately-held Turkish carrier Borajet from 2018.
