At a ceremony in Toulouse, SIA CEO, Goh Choon Phong, said his airline is on track to launch daily non-stop Singapore-San Francisco flights next week with the A350, but it needs to wait for the longer-range A350ULR in 2018, for which it is the launch customer, to launch direct flights to Los Angeles, a route 280nm longer than San Francisco.
SIA made the headlines last month when it said it would not renew the lease on its first A380 superjumbo. Goh now said in Toulouse SIA “continues to see a role” for the A380, most importantly on high-capacity routes to slot-constraint airfields. He credited the aircraft with having helped “develop” the carrier’s Singapore hub.
It has another five A380s on order from 2017, and Goh revealed that the airline will introduce upgraded cabin products on those aircraft.
