Lufthansa told Orient Aviation the suspension “was an extremely difficult decision”, but at this stage “this step needed to be taken to ensure sustainable commercial viability”.
The German flag carrier has been flying to Narita since 1978 and said it is “grateful for the support offered from local authorities and for the loyalty of the business communities during this time”. From March 27, Lufthansa will return to Frankfurt-Narita with three times a week A340-300 flights.
Lufthansa will continue its Tokyo Haneda daily B747-8 service and its five-weekly A340-600 rotations from Munich.
The airline told Orient Aviation that despite the surprising Frankfurt-Narita trunk route suspension, Japan remains one of its “key markets in Asia”, underscored by its strong relationship with ANA and its five-weekly B747-400 Frankfurt-Osaka and thrice-weekly A340-300 Frankfurt-Nagoya routes. Lufthansa Group carrier, SWISS, will continue to offer daily Zurich-Narita A340-300 flights.
