China Southern adds maiden A320neo and Guangzhou-Adelaide link

Guangzhou’s China Southern Airlines on Tuesday took delivery of the first of 24 on-order A320neo, fitted with Pratt & Whitney’s PW1100G geared turbofans. Read More » The remaining 23 aircraft, all on lease from AerCap, will arrive in Guangzhou by 2019. China Southern operates 123 A320ceo (and 87 A321 and 33 A319s).

The carrier launched a three times a week Guangzhou-Adelaide A330-200 route on Tuesday, and it planned to increase to daily if there is sufficient demand. The SkyTeam member serves Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney from Guangzhou and offers a Shenzhen-Sydney flight.

Adelaide is desperate for links to Asia after Qantas Airways terminated flights to Singapore in 2013. Cathay Pacific Airways connects Adelaide and Hong Kong five times a week, Singapore Airlines flies to Singapore ten times a week and Malaysia Airlines flies four times a week to Kuala Lumpur. Mainland carriers are conspicuously absent from South Australia.
