PIA chairman resigns
December 16th 2016
Muhammad Azam Saigol, chairman of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), on Monday resigned as the fallout from last week’s fatal ATR42-500 crash killing all 48 passengers and crew aboard continues. Read More »
Saigol, who took the chair at PIA just six months ago, stepped down for “personal reasons,” the national carrier said, without further comment.
PIA announced on Monday that it would ground its 10 remaining ATRs while the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) conducts "shakedown tests" of the turboprops. The grounding has significantly curtailed PIA’s domestic operations.
A probe into the crash by the PCAA’s Safety Investigation Board is ongoing. Officials say the aircraft suffered engine problems shortly after take-off.
