Of all airports with more than 6,000 daily departures, Osaka’s Itami Airport achieved the world’s best on-time performance in February, the Civil Aviation Data Analysis bureau (CADAS) said in its latest update. Read More »

At Itami, 95.13% of flights departed on-time, that is within 30 minutes of their scheduled departure time. Sapporo’s New Chitose International Airport ranked third at 91.04%, followed by Brisbane’s Eagle Farm Airport at 89.79%. Tokyo’s downtown Haneda Airport came in eighth with an on-time performance rate of 87.24%.

Considering Asia-Pacific airports only, Osaka’s Itami, Sapporo, Brisbane and Haneda obviously led the top ten. They were followed by Auckland Airport, Osaka Kansai, Fukuoka, Melbourne’s Tullamarine, Bangkok’s Don Mueang and Singapore’s Changi Airport. Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai were not in the top 20, meaning fewer than 70% of flights left on time.

Looking at Mainland Chinese airports only, the ten best on-time performers were: Dalian (80.89%), Xian, Chongqing, Lanzhou, Shenzhen, Qingdao, Chengdu, Jinan, Guangzhou and Wuhan (70.26%).

Beijing ranked 20th in the list with 60.95% of flights departing on schedule, followed by Pudong (23rd at 56.54%) and Hongqiao (25th at 54.08%).

The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) has made improving China’s on-time performance a top priority, particularly after top executives at China’s state-controlled carriers, in a deviation from regular practice, went on record saying Beijing must do more to innovate air traffic flows and systems.

In the same vein, CADAS’ latest airline on-time performance data shows the Japanese carriers lead the pack in the 400-plus daily departures category.

All Nippon Airways (ANA) scored 95.18%, followed by Japan Airlines (JAL), Air New Zealand, Virgin Australia, Qantas Airways, Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, Korean Air, Garuda Indonesia and Air China (83.59%).

In the less than 400 daily departures group, Singapore Airlines came out on top with 96.78%, followed by Thai AirAsia, Vietnam Airlines, ANA Wings and Cathay Pacific Airways.
