Earlier this year, Iran Air signed up for 20 of the turboprops, with options for another 20. Deliveries of the remaining 16 firm ATR orders will continue until year end 2018.
The mullah state is home to 60 airports that can be served by the ATRs. The turboprops are ideal for operations in challenging environments, including small airfields, unpaved runways and mountainous regions.
ATR CEO,Christian Scherer, said: "There are still historical moments in aviation, and this is one of them. We are proud and gratified our ATR aircraft are providing the solution to Iran's significant needs in regional connectivity. We salute Iran Air for their choice in our favour and the tremendous role they play in their country."
Iran Air CEO, Farhad Parvaresh, said: “Our new fleet of ATR 72-600s showcases our will to provide newest generation aircraft to our customers, therefore ensuring comfort, reliability and competitiveness. Strengthening the links between all our communities will encourage new business opportunities for everyone.”
Iran Air also has ordered 80 Boeing and 100 Airbus jets. An A321 and two A330-200s are now part of the flag carrier’s fleet; the result of order cancellations from Avianca.
In April, Iranian transport minister, Asghar Fakhrieh Kashan, announced Iran Air would receive its first Boeing aircraft, a B777-300ER, in May, more than a year ahead of schedule, because of a cancellation order from Turkish Airlines, but this did not materialize and the aircraft went to another operator.
