"Attracting a new international flight route is a big undertaking and it is excellent to see that we have interest from a respected international carrier," mayor of Karratha, Peter Long, said. "We need to make sure that we are getting a good deal for these flights, so we will negotiate with the interested airline to see if we can make the service viable."
Karratha currently has no international service, despite an A$35 million (US$26.2 million) upgrade to the facility which was completed in late 2015.
The airport receives regular domestic flights from Perth, operated by Qantas Airways, Alliance Airlines and Virgin Australia.
Karratha is a gateway to Western Australia’s mining and gas fields.
SilkAir currently flies from Singapore to Cairns and Darwin. Parent SIA serves Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney.
