"Following the success of the Vancouver route, we are excited to set up the first destination in the continental United States to expand our international network. The launch of Los Angeles will strengthen connections with our well developed Asia-Pacific network," said chief commercial officer, Li Dianchun.
The new route will be operated by Hong Kong Airlines’ new A350-900, the first of which is due to arrive in Hong Kong at the end of August. The HNA Group airline has 15 A350-900s on order, according to Airbus’ order log. The airline will fly the XWB on crew familiarization flights between Hong Kong, Bangkok, Hongqiao and Taipei from September 15.
Hong Kong Airlines’ Vancouver launch heightens competition for Cathay and its oneworld fellow, American Airlines across the trans-Pacific especially as the China-owned carrier is offering launch fares that are often 50% cheaper than those charged by its legacy rivals. Cathay flies four-class B777-300ERs four times a day to Los Angeles. American sends a three-class B777-300ER to the city daily.
