Qatar Airways drops plan to invest in American Airlines

Qatar Airways this week formally walked away from a planned investment in American Airlines. Qatar wanted to acquire a 4.74% holding initially, which it could have done without seeking the approval of the U.S. carrier’s board.
American said it was puzzled by the bid particularly given American’s “extremely public stance on the illegal subsidies that Qatar [Airways], Emirates [Airline] and Etihad [Airways] have all received over the years from their governments”, said Doug Parker, chairman and chief executive of the Fort Worth-based carrier. American has notified its oneworld alliance partner that it would end their codeshare agreement in March 2018.
