Those familiar with Thai Airways International (THAI) would know that ‘DD’ is the internal code for the position of the airline president. Read More » Acting THAI president, Khun Usanee Sangsingkeo, has created a “DD Command Center” to work more closely and better supervise major departments at the airline including revenue management, network, partnerships and catering. All departments must now provide regular reports to Khun Usanee’s DD command center.

The acting THAI boss is fighting a tough battle in returning the systemically mismanaged flag carrier to profitability. “As acting president, I will continue to strengthen the airline for more sustainable growth and more profit,” Khun Usanee said.

THAI has accepted five A350-900s. The airline is considering a replacement order for up to 20 older wide bodies, with more A350s, A380s or B777 and B787 series aircraft under consideration.

“We are going to send our crew to other airlines to observe and learn their products and services. Our crew usually don't fly with other airlines, so they don't realise the special services competitors may have. This will enable us to improve our products and services,” Khun Usanee said.

In July, THAI announced the addition of four-weekly B777-300ER flights between Bangkok and Vienna, the first long-haul route launched by the carrier in two years. The network addition is a curious decision as Bangkok-Vienna is well served by THAI’s Star partners. Austrian Airlines operates a daily B777-200ER service and EVA Airways flies B777-300ERs four times a week to the Austrian capital.
