Kuala Lumpur-headquartered AirAsia X, a long-haul subsidiary of the AirAsia Group, is considering converting its order for 66 A330-900neo to the larger A350-900 to meet expected passenger growth on its busiest routes. Read More »

In a Bloomberg interview, AirAsia founding father, Tony Fernandes, said the group was reviewing its future fleeting requirements, which could include a potential B787 order.

The AirAsia Group is an all-Airbus customer.  At press time, AirAsia had outstanding orders for 174 A320ceo, 304 A320neo, 100 A321neo as well as 20 A330-300s, the aforementioned 66 A330neo and 10 A350-900s for its long-haul AirAsia X.

AirAsia needs larger aircraft to operate on trunk routes between Asia’s most congested, slot-starved airports, e.g. Hong Kong-Bangkok and Bangkok-Shanghai. In the same vein, the group is thinking of converting some of its 300 on-order A320neo to the A321neo if it can turn around the larger jet in the same time, i.e. 30 minutes. The A330neo is scheduled to perform its maiden flight on October 18 in Toulouse.
