Australia’s Qantas Airways this week took delivery of the second of eight on firm order B787-9s. Read More » The delivery of the second B787 will enable the carrier to launch Melbourne-Los Angeles, replacing a B747-400 on the route. When the third and fourth B787s arrive in Australia, Qantas will commence nonstop Perth-London services from March.

At press time, Qantas International CEO, Alison Webster, announced Qantas would roster its Dreamliner between Melbourne and San Francisco from “late 2018”. The first Qantas -9 was delivered on October 20. The airline has been flying its latest fleet addition domestically ever since, on crew familiarization missions.

Qantas will decide next year if it will order more B787s, according to the airline group’s CEO, Alan Joyce. The Australian flag carrier holds 45 additional purchase options and rights for the -9.

“It’s very important to get those initial few. Then you would order more as you demonstrate to your shareholders that the market can make a go of them. Like the 787, we had eight firm orders but 45 purchase options and rights. They come up next year for action,” Joyce said.
