Cambodia Airport Investment Co., a joint venture between local conglomerate Overseas Cambodia Investment Corporation (OCIC) and the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation, will be responsible for building the 4F class airport, the Khmer Times has reported. The project has been estimated at US$1.5 billion, of which OCIC is expected to shoulder up to 90%. No timeline has been disclosed.

“As far I know, the location being considered for the new airport is somewhere in southern Phnom Penh. It will be comparable in size to the new airport in Siem Reap,” Sin Chansereyvutha, a spokesman for the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation said, and added the capital’s new airport would cater to long-haul flights.

Last year was by far the most dynamic 12 months in the history of modern Cambodian aviation. JC International Airlines, Lanmei Airlines and Small Planet Cambodia were launched and many international airlines began flying to the country, including All Nippon Airways, Emirates Airline and Qatar Airways, as well as most Mainland full-service and low-cost carriers.
