From March 27, Germany’s Lufthansa will resume three times a week Shenyang-Frankfurt A340-300 nonstop flights, once again marking the city’s sole direct link to Europe.

Up to March 2016, Lufthansa operated a three times weekly Frankfurt-Shenyang-Qingdao route, but it then split the route to serve both Chinese cities also three times a week. The airline terminated its flights to Shenyang in October 2016, but maintained its Qingdao destination.

Lufthansa will roster a three-class A340 on the Shenyang route, featuring 30 business, 28 premium economy and 221 economy class seats. For the time being, Shenyang’s sole intercontinental route is a weekly Sichuan Airlines A330-200 flight to Vancouver.

Shenyang Airport has been lobbying strongly for more nonstop services. On January 20, China Southern Airlines launched a daily nonstop A320 rotation to Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Thailand’s long-haul low-cost carrier, NokScoot, also flies to Shenyang from Bangkok from the Thai capital’s Don Mueang Airport. From today, NokScoot is increasing frequency on the route from four to five a week flights with a B777-200ER.

Shenyang is the capital and largest city of China’s northeastern Liaoning Province. In 2017, Taoxian International Airport handled approximately 17 million passengers, marking it China’s 24th busiest airport.
