Including all 36 aircraft, the deal has a value of US$16 billion at list prices. Deliveries will start in 2020.
The Dubai-based carrier has yet to decide on an engine choice for this latest order. Part of Emirates’ A380 fleet is powered by GE engines and part by Rolls-Royce power plants.
The order is highly significant for the A380 programme because it secures production of the aircraft for another ten years.
“This agreement underscores our commitment to the A380 programme, providing stability to the A380 production line and supporting thousands of high-value jobs across the aviation supply chain. For Emirates, the A380 has been a successful aircraft for our customers, our operations, and our brand,” said Emirates Airline and Group CEO, HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum.
“We thank Emirates, HH Sheikh Ahmed, Tim Clark and Adel Al-Redha for their continued confidence in the A380, which has so successfully transformed air travel in the 21st century,” said Fabrice Brégier, president and COO of Airbus Commercial Aircraft.
Emirates is by far the best A380 customer. The airline now operates 102 of the superjumbos, with another 60 on firm order, plus 16 options.
To date, 223 A380s have been delivered to 13 carriers. Airbus has admitted that without this latest deal with Emirates it would have had to prematurely shut down the programme.
