March 23rd 2018
Narita International Airport Corp. (NAIC) has concluded an agreement with Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Chiba Prefecture and local municipalities to build a third runway by 2030 and also to extend the airport’s operating hours, effective this year, to avoid a pending capacity crunch at the airport and also at downtown Tokyo’s Haneda Airport. Japanese media reported this week that the third runway would be 3,500m long. In the interim, NAIC has decided to extend Narita’s second runway by 1,000m to 3,500m by 2020.
Going forward, Narita will change its operating hours from 6am-11pm to 5am-00:30am. It is the first time since 1978 that Narita has been allowed to adjust its operating hours. The third runway, the runway extension and the improved hours are forecast to raise the number of take-off and landing slots at Narita from 300,000 a year to 500,000 annually.
