Singapore Airlines takes delivery of first B787-10

Singapore Airlines (SIA) this week took delivery of the world’s first B787-10, the largest variant in the Dreamliner family. Read More » At the handover ceremony in North Charleston, South Carolina, SIA CEO, Goh Choon Phong, said the Star Alliance member was honoured to be “the world’s first airline to take delivery of this amazing aircraft”.

Goh was visibly moved by the event. “I may shiver a little; it's because I'm very excited,” he said. The SIA CEO said the B787-10 would be “an important element” in the airline’s “overall growth strategy”.

The new SIA aircraft is configured with 36 business class and 301 economy class seats, with 1-2-1 flat-bed seating in the premium cabin. The aircraft will fly on the airline’s medium-haul regional routes beginning with Osaka on May 3 followed by Perth on May 7.

The -10 variant is 11m longer than the B787-8 and 5.5m longer than the -9. It has a range of 6,430nm. The SIA Group now operates all three Dreamliner variants. Its low-cost SCOOT subsidiary flies the -8 and the -9.

“This combination of our 787 family will allow Singapore Airlines to put the right airplane on the right route,” said Boeing Commercial Airplanes president and CEO, Kevin McAllister. Also present at the ceremony was Rolls-Royce director for customers and services, civil aerospace, Dominic Horwood. SIA has chosen the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 to power its Dreamliner fleet.

“This is a big day for all of us at Boeing and for our global supplier partners. We are thrilled to deliver the first 787-10 Dreamliner to Singapore Airlines. And we are honored by Singapore's partnership and trust, as reflected by their repeated orders for the Dreamliner,” McAllister said. Boeing has received 171 orders for the B787-10. SIA is the by far best customer with 49 orders for the type.

Other -10 orders from the Asia-Pacific and the Middle East are Etihad Airways (30), EVA Air (18) and All Nippon Airways (3).
