Singapore Airlines (SIA) low-cost subsidiary, Scoot, will wet-lease a SIA B777-200ER as at least one of Scoot’s Rolls-Royce Trent 1000-powered B787s is undergoing mandated engine checks and possible replacement. Read More »

The wet-leased SIA B777-200ER will operate Scoot’s Singapore-Sydney route from June 6 through to June 30, with further changes possible.

Scoot is the latest carrier forced to source extra capacity as a result of cracks found in the blades of Trent 1000 intermediate pressure compressor rotors.

Air New Zealand this week disclosed that its Auckland-Honolulu flights would be operated by wet-leased HiFly A340-300 aircraft in June as the Trent 1000 issues continue crippling its B787-9 fleet. Norwegian this week said it would fly wet-leased A340-500s between Europe and the U.S. as the engine troubles continue. THAI and other airlines are seeking compensation from Rolls-Royce for the downtime.

Rolls-Royce this week said it was accelerating the process of inspections and the development of a permanent fix for the issues, i.e. developing and certifying a revised compressor blade.

The UK-based OEM has installed an enhanced compressor in a test engine and if successful, it hopes to have the first parts available for overhauls by the end of this year, rather than in 2019 as initially indicated.

“We fully recognize the unacceptable levels of disruption our customers are facing,” said Rolls-Royce civil aerospace president, Chris Cholerton. “We are intensely focused on minimizing this and we have set our teams the challenge of doing everything we can to recover our customers’ operations as swiftly as possible,” he added.
