July 13th 2018
Lufthansa Group carrier, Vienna-based Austrian Airlines, will terminate its five-weekly Vienna-Hong Kong B777-200ER route from October 27. Read More » The Star Alliance member launched the route less than two years ago only, in September 2016.
The Hong Kong route has never produced good returns for Austrian; there was too much cannibalization from Lufthansa’s daily flights to both Frankfurt and Munich, as well as the daily SWISS service to Zurich.
Austrian will redeploy the spare capacity on additional frequencies to Beijing, Shanghai, Chicago and Newark.
“With the entire fleet and now 12 long-haul aircraft, we want to offer a denser route network and thus an improved offer for our passengers,” said Austrian CCO, Andreas Otto. “For this reason, we will take advantage of available capacities, especially to serve North America more optimally. This way, we aim to be more attractive to business travelers and transfer passengers in Eastern Europe and also to simply gain more customers,” he added.
Apart from Hong Kong, Austrian will also terminate its flights to Colombo, Havana, Shiraz, Isfahan and Linz.
Austrian operates a long-haul fleet comprising six B777-200ERs and six B767-300ERs.
