ANA will be the first major airline in Asia to offer economy passengers an upgraded meal for ¥2,500 (US$23). The option, also available in premium economy, is for all North America (except Hawaii) and Europe flights. Other passengers will continue to receive a normal meal for free.
Malaysia Airlines briefly offered upgraded meals for $18. Pre-order upgraded meals are common at European airlines, with Air France offering a range for $14-32, Austrian $17 and British Airways $20-23.
Inflight Feed website and consultancy founder Nik Loukas says airlines have so far seen an uptake rate of 2-5% of total passengers. As airlines gain passenger contact information and take more control of the booking and trip management process, merchandising uptake rates could increase at full-service airlines.
Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific have introduced seat selection fees for certain economy class tickets.
