Korean medium/long-haul start-up Air Premia is moving forward with September 2020 launch plans after having been one of three airlines to secure a new license from the Korean government.

Air Premia and Air Lease announced the Korean start-up will lease three 787-9s from Air Lease’s existing order book. A configuration was not specified. The three aircraft will be delivered in July 2020, September 2020 and November 2020. The aircraft will be powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines.

Incheon-based Air Premia plans to operate 10 787-9s within five years. Later this quarter it expects to make further announcements on aircraft deliveries. Air Premia in January said it would take five 787s from lessors split between three in its first year of operation and two in its second year of operation.

Summer 2020 AOC approval will enable September 2020 regional Asia flying. Air Premia expects to launch long-haul flights in 2021 to Los Angeles and San Jose, and possibly Honolulu and Vancouver. Air Premia has also flagged Europe, but this will require Russian over-flight rights and local traffic rights. Korea has open skies with Canada and the US.

Air Premia is headed by former Jeju Air CEO Dr Jong Chul Kim.
