Reuters reported that Air New Zealand selected Boeing for fleet renewal, but there were no details on specific aircraft selection and quantity ordered.
Air NZ previously said it would announce its fleet renewal by June 30. The airline is looking to replace eight 777-200ERs. Air NZ already operates the 777-300ER and 787-9.
The 787 and 777X families were under consideration, in addition to the A350, Air NZ initially identified. The airline later narrowed the competition to the A350 and 787. Air NZ does not fly any widebody Airbus aircraft.
The New Zealand Herald said the order would be formally announced early next week, and the Herald believed the favourite is a “modified” 787 capable of serving New York non-stop. There were no details on what the modifications consist of. Air NZ’s longest non-stop flight is to Chicago. Qantas serves New York with a stopover in Los Angeles. Air NZ is also interested in serving Brazil, which is further than its only Latin American destination, Buenos Aires.
