Qantas has immediately responded to draft U.S. Department of Transport (DOT) approval for a joint venture (JV) with American Airlines (AA) by saying it would launch flights from Brisbane to Chicago and San Francisco.
Chicago is a new destination for Qantas. Brisbane-Chicago would eclipse Sydney-Dallas as the airline’s longest North American service and would second longest globally after Perth-London. Qantas serves New York via Los Angeles.
Qantas said details of the services would be confirmed once DOT gives final approval for the JV. AA is expected to make its own route announcements for Australia following JV approval. So far it is unclear what the net growth is versus drawing down existing North American flights and re-deploying the capacity.
